Zelda Classic Realm is dead.

LinktheMaster and I would like to thank everyone that stuck with us throughout the site's rather short lifespan. It was a fun experiment. We still feel something like this is needed on some level for the ZC community. We just wish it had worked out. We really do.

The content will remain on the site for now, but it will be wiped out in January of 2012. That's right. Zelda Classic Realm will be deleted in January of 2012. If you have anything stored on here you would like to backup, you have until then to do so.

LinktheMaster and I are honestly kind of tired of it sitting here mocking us at what could have been. I could make up a reason such as "the server space could be used for something else." It would even be a legitimate reason. However, ZCR never was about babying, so there is the straight answer.

I admit that we made several mistakes in the managing of this site. One of them was the fact that it was managed almost solely by two college kids that went between being extremely busy and being extremely lazy. If we had more help in our weak areas (especially advertisement), I feel things might have been salvageable.

But there is more to it than that and I feel I have to explain this.

Near the beginning of the year, we were prepped to make another ZCR revival attempt that would spin it away from being a PureZC clone to some degree. However, the idea would have been iffy on whether it worked or not.

But then the PureZC staff started discussing the possibility of hosting ZC since AGN was in attack site status and showed no signs of anyone caring enough to fix it. It had been like that for over two months at that point.

LinktheMaster and I decided to pitch the idea of creating a brand new official ZC site. This was a rather daring move since the last attempt at this was Zelda Classic Network (which did not end well). But we were mainly worried about the state of ZC due to the lack of an official site that wasn't flagged by Google and seemingly neglected by its owner.

The idea got support. Even the developers seemed to support it. Because we were putting efforts into an official ZC site at this point, ZCR was put on the backburner for rather obvious reasons.

All seemed to be going well... until it didn't go anywhere. Typical of anything ZC related, really. I know I sound bitter. It's because I am. This post sums up how I feel about the whole thing. Obviously, a lot more happened than I described in that thread, but that is the gist of it.

As you can also tell from that thread, we made a last stab to try and do something even vaguely related to a new website for ZC stuff. But it's clear that the ZC Community as a whole is satisfied with things being in a state of flux. LinktheMaster and I are both tired of trying to fight that, so we've given up. Fighting it essentially on our own has not been worth it.

That does include this website. There isn't a point to continue with it unless some sort of miracle happens on several fronts. The only reason LinktheMaster and I have still been interested in ZC is because we have put effort into a quest since 2007 that we are not wanting to waste. Our recent creation of Weekly Random Review is also somewhat useful for making us more interested in it.

But like I said before, we really are sad that it has come to this. We still feel that the ZC community needs a stable website that has integrated 2.50 support. But what we feel ZC needs may actually not be what it needs. Maybe we were wrong to take this approach? Who knows?

Regardless, Zelda Classic Realm was fun while it lasted. We really did enjoy creating it and working with it. We'd like to once again thank everyone for hanging around when it was more active.

This was originally posted at PureZC: original thread, but I figured I should post about it over here too.

The Legend of Zelda

World Tree

Background - Why a new quest instead of finishing Zelda II Classic?
Over a year ago I started Zelda II Classic, introducing features such as scripted smooth sidescrolling, smooth overworld scrolling, script based level/XP system, proper scrolling sideview enemies, random encounters and more. While I got pretty far in the scripting - see this topic to view the results for yourself - I got busy with other real life issues and stopped working on the project due to lack of time. Now that I am returning, I don't want to go through the tedium required to mimic another game - in order to hold my interest with the limited time I have available I really need to work on a custom game.

This quest will consist entirely of smooth scrolling overworld and sideview areas - just like my Zelda 2 demo. But the content will be custom, though it will use my Zelda 2 tileset as a base which I will then modify. Fortunately a lot of the scripting is already done, so I can concentrate on content.

If you remember, way back when, I talked about a trilogy for Zelda II Classic. This quest is basically the third game in that trilogy - the other two will probably not be made. Now onto the quest....

Note: I will post updates and screenshots in this thread as I work on this.

Story Introduction
The Great World Tree holds the universe together, connecting the various worlds along it's branches, trunk and roots. Hyrule is among the satellite worlds, existing on one of the outer leaves of the World Tree. So remote is it, that the Great World Tree is but a whisper of a legend among the modern folk of Hyrule...

This story starts off shortly after the end of Zelda 2
Still resting from the exhausting task of retrieving the Triforce of Courage and awakening princess Zelda from her long slumber - Link's view of the world is forever changed. A voice calls out to Link from his dream, a voice as large as the world itself - a rumble of pain and longing... In his dream he sees an impossibly large tree - its branches towering over mountain tops, reaching into the heavens themselves. Slowly the ground resolves itself for him and he sees a world being held up by this giant tree. Above, Link sees the sparkling of the stars and knows, instinctively, that one of those stars is his home of Hyrule - being held in the heavens by this impossibly large tree.

As the dream continues, Link notices that the bark of the tree is becoming soft and dark. Areas of green and gray become visible and start to grow... Within minutes the stars begin to fall out of the sky, hurtling into the dark abyss - forever lost to darkness and death. The ground beneath him begins to crack and all of the cosmos begins to split and plummet into the darkness...

Finally Link awakens from his dream, but he knows that this wasn't a dream at all but a message from the Great World Tree itself. It is dying, and with it so will all worlds - including his own. Something or someone is causing this, causing the World Tree itself to rot.

Seeking the princess and wise men of the kingdom, Link learns that there is a portal that leads through a branch of the World Tree to Daesarkoh - the world at the base of the tree itself. To protect itself, the World Tree does not allow most material items to pass through... so Link is forced to travel to a new world with nothing but the clothes on his back.

More Story Background
People have always tried to communicate with the Gods, seeking to commune with the Cosmos. While self-proclaimed Gods and other spirits would sometimes answer, the Cosmos - the World Tree itself - was completely silent. The Druids of the Tree sought the voice of the Tree for many years - centuries maybe even millennia. Finally a rare form of magic was discovered using the basic essence of life that permeates and extends from the Tree itself. A number of towers were built that formed a ring, connected by a stream of this essence. These towers each played a part in amplifying the essence - not it's power but the strength of it's connection with the life force of the Tree itself. Each tower has a sacred place at it's base where specially trained Druids can commune with the Tree using this, now strengthened, life essence. For the first time, the Cosmos had a voice that humans could hear.

It was surprising to learn that this communication could be initiated both ways, the Tree could channel it's voice through these towers and speak to anyone, anywhere. As one Druid once put it: "It's as if we were created to give a voice to the very Cosmos itself. We are a way for the Cosmos to learn to know itself."

Life continued on, the Druids continued to commune with the World Tree and to spread their message of balance and reverence. The towers were well cared for with only the occasional abuse of power. The problems started occurring when the self-proclaimed Gods became jealous of the Druids and a living Cosmos much bigger then themselves. They started to say that the voice of the Tree must be nothing more then trickery - the Druids seeking power by proclaiming themselves as the only people who could speak to the Cosmos itself. But they dared not have their followers directly move against the Druids for who would want to be accused of attacking the followers of the Tree? But slowly and surely they spread their message of distrust against the Druids. Many stopped believing that the Tree had a life of it's own at all - believing it to be vitally important but as conscious as a stone.

After a while the various kingdoms began to close off their borders, only allowing the Druids to live in and around the towers and no where else. It was after years of distrust and tension that the weird events started to occur. Something had happened with the towers and with them, the Tree. The changes to the tree were gradual and largely unnoticed but the changes to the towers happened practically over night.

The Golden Tower (Dungeon in the upcoming demo)
The Golden tower was built using much of the wealth possessed by the Druids and their followers. The very walls are made of bricks of gold, the pillars shinning white and pure. Even the carpets were adorned with symbols made from gold weave. In it's base sits the sacred place where many used to commune with the Cosmos.

The tower served as a beacon of hope, a place where one felt like a part of something bigger then themselves. Then came the night of darkness. The tower was enveloped in a black mist, all living things in and around the tower quickly decayed and aged. Before the bones of the caretakers could hit the ground, they decayed, broke apart into dust and were blown away by the wind.

So sudden were their deaths that the spirits of the Druids are still trapped inside the tower. The soft weeping can still be heard from the sacred place in the depths of the tower... Many of the spirits have learned to temporarily take on solid form and still, even after several years, maintain as much of the tower as they can. Upon entering one can't help but notice that the place looks new, the gold floors still as bright as ever. But beneath the glimmer there is a darkness inside the tower... a darkness that drives the once peaceful Druids to kill all those that enter their domain.

Unfortunately not all of the tower can be maintained by the dead, some parts are crumbling - attacked by the plants from outside that, in cruel irony, seem to grow faster now then they did before that night. It seems to be only a matter of time before the decay of the Tower spreads, when the dead will no longer be able to keep it standing.

------------------------------------------
This will be the dungeon featured in the demo. Not the first you'll encounter in the final game but you'll have some additional items to help test out the combat mechanics. (See Playtest below for more information).

The World
The world of Daesarkoh consists of an upper plane - anchored at the middle of the trunk, a lower plane where the roots of the tree dig into the ground and the underworld - a large cave system.

The upper plane is open to the air, with forests, plains, deserts, mountains and so forth - very similar in appearance to Hyrule. This is where Link starts his adventure.

In contrast the lower plane does not get much sunlight, it is a darker place where only a small amount of sunlight filters through. Near the base of the tree, giant roots make up what would be forests and mountain ranges. As you get further away from the base and roots, you start running into the ash plains - a dark and dreary place for the living but the ash that blows from these plains helps to feed the roots of the Tree. As you travel through the ash plains, lava flows and lakes start becoming more common. This is where the geothermic energy is generated that heats the tree from below.

Then there are the caves of the underworld, which few have seen and even fewer will speak of...

Gameplay
Here I will discuss the gameplay I'm planning for this quest.

There are several elements of Zelda 2 that enhanced the series - many of which are used even in modern Zelda games. Some of the elements, while decent, don't really fit well with the series - at least not the way they were implemented. To put it simply, in this quest I will be combining the gameplay elements of Zelda 2 that I liked and the elements of other Zelda games that I feel were missing from Zelda 2.

Several elements are remaining from Zelda 2. These include the smooth scrolling RPG like overworld, featuring many different types of terrain, caves, towns, roads, ruins and so forth. Enemies you meet on the overworld will still take you to a sideview combat area - like in Zelda 2. However there will not be any random encounters, enemy groups will also be visible on the overworld map. This means that you can try to avoid them, however they may try and chase you down as well.

Obviously the towns and NPCs are remaining, including people who can heal you, restore your magic and give you clues. There will be people who can teach you new spells and abilities but there will also be shops (see below).

One of the things that was missing was the sense of progression through items - other then life/magic containers. This was replaced in Zelda 2 by the experience/level system. In all honesty, even though the Z2 system was ok, the item based progression fits with the Zelda series and allows the game to have a controlled, non-"grindy" sense of progression (yes I grinded levels in Z2 when I got tired of losing all my experience when I died...). This means that active items will be reintroduced that can directly be used in combat areas. This includes the boomerang, bow, grappling hook, bombs and so forth. This also means that instead of raising life and attack levels you will gain sword upgrades, new weapons, tunic upgrades and shields.

In place of the experience system, money will return as will shops which you can find in towns and other areas as mentioned above.

Dungeons will also be a little different... with the introduction of active items and various other elements, dungeons can have puzzle elements now. Doors and openings can exist in the middle of a scrolling section - like in towns - allowing for another dimension of exploration, as well as things like secret rooms you can bomb walls/floors to open. Dungeons will continue to be accessible after you complete them, so there may be secrets or bonuses that you can only acquire after getting items in future dungeons.

One last thing I'd like to mention, the elevators are going to be replaced by ladders and stairs.

Playtest
What I'm planning on doing is making a dungeon for testing, which may be used in the final game after modifications, where I will test these gameplay elements. I will then release it here to get feedback from you guys on how the game plays, etc.. I will include a variety of items/weapons that in the final game Link won't get until progressing through the game a bit (think of it as a dungeon midway through the game). This will be a "vertical slice" of the game, allowing you to get a feel of the what the final game will be like.

This will also allow me to test a few, relatively minor, upgrades that I plan for the scripted scrolling system including:
* Vertical and horizontal scrolling in the sidescrolling areas. Make areas that are more then 1 screen tall.
* Front and back layers. Allow things to pass in front of the Link and allow for backgrounds behind the scrolling screen that area stationary - like the sky in my earlier demos. Since the World Tree trunk is essentially visible as the center of the world, this will have a cool grounding effect.
* 45 degree slopes. Allow for ground that isn't always flat blocks as well as allowing for vertical + horizontal movement. The case where slopes are used can be detected from the current collision flags (I already make use of partial block collision).

Other then a few upgrades like these, most of my scripting time will be spent on enemies and items. I plan on spending as little time on scripting as I can, while still accomplishing my goals. This will be possible because of the earlier work I did on the Zelda 2 demo.

This demo will allow me to give you guys a gameplay demo without giving away too much of the final experience.

Videos
I've uploaded a short tech video from the quest. It only shows the dungeon entrance - which is about 3 screens long right now. It is meant to show some of the tech and art that is currently working.

This includes:
* Smooth scrolling and collision (of course).
* Parallax sky/background (though the background itself is placeholder).
* Stairs / slopes.
* Ladders.

Note that breakable/throwable pots aren't in yet but will be soon. Also note that there is no ladder climbing animation currently, I will do that later.

* Stairs / slopes.
* Ladders.

Note that breakable/throwable pots aren't in yet but will be soon. Also note that there is no ladder climbing animation currently, I will do that later.
Here it is:
This stage is not done yet, obviously. I've been using Rayman 2 Textures, and Mario 3 "textures". Hopefully it will be playable, but either way, I'm doing it for fun. I'm trying to keep the level under 1MB since a lot of stuff I've read/ watched about the importer says it needs to be under 1MB.
I've also been working on levels for a SM64 hack. There is a third party thing for Toad's Tool 64 which allows you to import .obj files, and replace stages with them.

Nintendo blown it with Wii 2 strategy says Pachter

Wedbush Security analyst, Michael Pachter thinks that Nintendo have ‘blown it’ with the Nintendo Wii 2′s two console strategy.

With all the hype being made about the Nintendo 3DS hand held system being launched these days, it seems to be consuming most of Nintendo’s time.

However, Michael Pachter has been saying that Nintendo really needs to be concentrating on the Wii 2 right now.

Although he has been insisting that Nintendo put more time into the Wii 2, he seems to be incredibly pessimistic about their two console strategy.

Sales in the Wii console have been greatly declined of late, with business dropping by 38& in December in the US alone.

In an interview with James Brightman at Industry Gamers, Pachter states, “With as much respect for Nintendo management as I can muster, I think Nintendo’s completely blown it with their second generation Wii strategy. I think they have the mentality that to launch a new console they have to retire the old, and I think that’s wrong.

“I think the right strategy would have been to get a second generation Wii out and keep the old Wii at the same time, and have the second generation be the natural progression upgrade model.

“Instead, they’re actually conceding that multi-player market to Xbox 360 and PS3. They’ve always conceded it, but now with Kinect and Move, it’s a lot easier for people to make 360 or PS3 their starter console.”

Pachter does however claim that he could be wrong. After all Nintendo has had a large amount of success so far.

A Real City

I have not seen any quest to date which, has all essences of a city. I understand that many quests have villages, and were in 2.10 limiting possibilities. Yet, with the availability of 2.5, I would like to propose some ideas I have had upon a real city feeling. Although everyone's city definition may differ, the general idea should not be so far. I'll update this when I find time.

===A Real City===

- Shops: Shops within a city should sell all sorts of items, at low levels or mid. By this, I mean that, a general store, blacksmith, potion shop, armory, and any other misc. store should be present. Depending on the towns area income should determine prices or quality of items sold. Never less, level 1 bracelets, swords, shields, bottles, quivers and what not fit in perfect to a city feel.

- Authority/Government: Law buildings are great for side quests. Majora's Mask held a Mayor's Office, which allowed a player to visit more culture and in depth feeling of the game. Authority/police stations may bring more interest in quest, and not the typical peace all happy crap cop-less town.

- Fun: Fun buildings blossom a quest's reputation. This could be a gambling house. This may also be a pub with fighting drunks and singing songs of ye old country and me potato farm. Not only pubs, but shipyards, train stations, and everything else to make a city seem like its "there". Realistically, cities usually flourish where transportation is available like a bay area. Really though, to tie in the city, laws should be where a citizen may say out loud. Think the alcohol ban in the Roaring Twenties for the USA. Speakeasies in a quest would be awesome.

- Employment: I got this idea while recently stoned. I figured if a player needs some extra cash or wants side items, an employment office would do. By this, each separate room could tell brief info and skill recommendations. Upon understanding, a warp tile may let the player transport to an area. Each area would have a few Octoroks, Keese, puzzles and everything else to challenge the player. Heart container pieces to rupees to eatable shields, this isn't such a bad idea.

- Crime: Crime would make a quest interesting. I figured that with an authority sector should be a Black Market sector in the lower income area of the town. Here, by secret access, could a player enter a part of town where they would be open to purchase counterfeit, one use swords, shields, etc. for major currency. Even a side quest or two may be fit in to such an area. Using a Super Bomb in a prison to free convicted criminals for a heart container piece is pretty cool. A screen which a player could accidentally stumble upon, which three guys beat a guy and have him laying on the floors, has the screen function of leave money or life.

- Inns: Inns are nice, especially with Wind Waker House theme. The comfort usually compliments a quest. A player should be able to wander the halls which may have numerous floors or not. To arise fun, certain rooms should be accessible and all that jazz.

- Libraries: Libraries are interesting in fantasy stories. Typically, a one story library exists which a player could learn a thing or two. Yet, the big fun in a library is its secrets. Underneath could a catacombs be where magic containers or the magic book be, with a hell of a lot of keese. Fun.

- Members Building: Custom items work to make a quest more fun. Therefore, a building which requires a bait item to get in would be pretty cool. A signature item or side quest completion may exist within the premises. Much like the member shop in Oracle of Seasons, or Milk Bar in Majora's Mask.

..the ZC community won't grow.

We get a lot of new members, excluding spam bots, who come here interested in ZC. Of course, these "n00bs" often make a bad first impression by making a topic posing a mundane question about stuff we "oldbies" know like the ABCs. They get short, snarky replies, or are warded off by a wall of technical jargon, that again, comes as second nature to us.

Oldbies will quickly throw out links to these mythical "tutorials" which should explain everything ever from the existence of God, to the new theory of relativity. Well, they don't. Come on. It's 2010. We grew up in the "read about shit" era. The younger internet generation is the "watch a video about doing shit" crowd.

What I think the community really needs to grow, the right way, is to focus on making the program accessible. Such attempts at some huge compendium of info have the right idea, but lack the support from those of us who can't be bothered to add something. Who wants to read? I love the idea of a huge library of referable resources. However, I think having effective, and accessible video tutorials is effective too, and may be the very leap in internet usability that could make or break future generations of ZC users.

I posted this over at AGN, and figured I'd post it here too. I'd also recommend this: Maybe ZCR could be the first ZC site to host an official ZC video tutorial series? It it something no other ZC site has focused on, and I think it would bring a lot of people here.

I see it being kind of like this. Anyone can pick a point from a pre-defined outline of topics, and make a video about it. Of course, these videos will have to meet certain quality standards.

I'm guilty of basically every point I've made, I'm just saying. What are your thoughts?

So I'm attempting another quest. Last time I made one, I got about halfway through it and lost all my progress due to some bad luck with my hard drive and some rather sandy conditions.

I'm starting another one and I've got backups on two computers and an external hard drive...I won't lose it this time

So my quest is called "The Golden Power" and will feature non-linear gameplay with a bit of story on the side.

Link is a young treasure hunter who has just gotten to Hyrule. He is eventually recruited into the war effort to battle Ganondorf's monster hordes. Ganondorf is searching for the Triforce and the entrance to the Golden Land. This is based off of the idea of a great "Imprisoning War" that is mentioned in ALttP's backstory.

Anyway, my main focus is non-linearity. Most of the overworld will be explorable right from the beginning, and the dungeons can be done in most any order, save a few quirks. If you finish a latter dungeon sooner rather than later, you might be able to take shortcuts in earlier dungeons when you return back to them. I also want to cut the number of Triforce Pieces to 3 or 4 rather than 8, but still retain 8 dungeons. Earlier dungeons will have areas that you will have to come back to later so you can pick up more items and power-ups using equipment that you find later in the quest.

I'm not pumping this up to be some huge deal. I'm just making a quest to make a quest. If people play it, great, if not, it won't hurt my feelings. I figured I would just get some feedback on some of these screen shots. I'll have a demo ready by next weekend with the "first" dungeon and the starting area explorable.

Here are some screen shots so far:

So, I got really bored, and I kind of wanted to see what the title screen from Zelda 1 might look like if it where real. After Googling some pictures to edit together, I came up with these. I am thinking of doing a backdrop package, and submitting it as a loose tile submission.

NOTE: These have not been reduced in color yet to work with ZC's palettes. That would be done if these were to be used in ZC. As of now, I just did them for fun, and was wondering what people thought. The general superimposition is not the best, but when the images are sapped of color in ZC, it probably won't even be noticeable. I have done some other images like this, and some of them even use pictures I took myself. I would also do some to be used like in Pokemon where you see an image before an area.

Maybe ZCR should have a fall expo, or something. It might bring some traffic to the site. I know Pure does fall/ spring expos, so maybe a winter/ summer expo might be better here. That way, there would almost always be some sort of expo going on at any time of the year throughout the ZC world.

Like any other ZC expo, people could show demos, screens, and maybe scripts.

I'm kind of surprised one hasn't been suggested yet (or maybe I missed it).
